NEET 2026 Counselling: Special Stray Round Registration & Choice Filling Underway

Overview

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) counselling process for the 2026 academic session is entering its final stages with the commencement of the Special Stray Round. This crucial phase has opened registration and choice filling for eligible candidates, presenting a last-chance opportunity for many to secure a seat in medical colleges across India. The announcement marks a significant point in the admission cycle, as it aims to fill any remaining vacant seats after the regular counselling rounds have concluded.

Why This Matters for Students

For thousands of students who have diligently prepared for NEET and participated in the preceding counselling rounds, the Special Stray Round represents a vital, final gateway to their medical education aspirations. It is particularly important for those who may not have secured their preferred college or course in earlier rounds, or for those who missed the deadlines for subsequent rounds due to unforeseen circumstances. This round is designed to ensure that as few seats as possible remain unfilled, thereby maximizing opportunities for deserving candidates. Understanding the nuances of this round and acting promptly can be the difference between securing a medical seat and waiting another year.

Key Details and Dates

The registration and choice-filling period for the Special Stray Round of NEET 2026 counselling has officially begun. While specific end dates for registration and choice filling are critical, candidates must refer to the official schedule released by the counselling authorities. Following the choice-filling process, the seat allotment result will be published. Candidates who are allotted a seat in this round will then be required to report to their respective institutions within a stipulated timeframe to confirm their admission. It is imperative for students to stay updated with the official timelines to avoid missing any critical deadlines.

How to Prepare

Preparation for the Special Stray Round requires a strategic approach:

• Review Vacant Seats: Thoroughly examine the list of vacant seats that have been released for this round. Pay close attention to the colleges and courses available, considering your rank and preferences.
• Understand Eligibility Criteria: Re-confirm your eligibility for this specific round. There might be particular conditions or requirements that apply only to the stray round.
• Prioritize Choices: Carefully select your preferred colleges and courses during the choice-filling process. Rank them in order of preference, ensuring you include all acceptable options.
• Be Realistic: While aiming high is important, it's also crucial to be realistic about your chances based on your NEET score and the competition for the remaining seats.
• Keep Documents Ready: Ensure all your necessary documents, including mark sheets, certificates, ID proofs, and any category-specific certificates, are readily available and in order.
• Financial Planning: Be prepared for the admission and tuition fees. Understand the fee structure of the colleges you are considering.

What Should Students Do Next?

Candidates who are eligible and interested in participating in the Special Stray Round should take the following steps:

• Register Immediately: Complete the online registration process as soon as possible within the designated window.
• Fill Choices Diligently: Log in to the counselling portal and fill in your choices for colleges and courses. Take your time to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Lock Your Choices: After filling, remember to lock your choices before the deadline. Unlocked choices may not be considered.
• Monitor Results: Keep a close watch on the official website for the seat allotment result.
• Act Swiftly on Allotment: If a seat is allotted, follow the instructions for downloading the allotment letter and reporting to the college within the specified period.
• Be Aware of Security Deposit: Some rounds may require a security deposit. Ensure you understand the payment procedures and deadlines.
